Helping a parent from a distance
A lot of the people doing this organising are not in the same city — or the same country. The guilt is real and mostly misplaced: a surprising amount can be arranged well from a distance, and worrying from afar helps no one.
What you can set up from anywhere
More than you would think. The My Aged Care assessment can be started by phone on 1800 200 422, and you can be on the call. Meals, cleaning, the garden, transport and shopping can all be arranged and paid for remotely, and repeated each week. Prescriptions and groceries can be set to deliver.
You do not have to be in the room to take the load off. You have to make the calls.
Get eyes on the ground
The thing distance costs you is noticing — so build in someone who is there. A regular visitor, paid or through the free Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme, or a Meals on Wheels delivery, both put a person in front of your parent regularly, and both will usually say something if they are worried.
A trusted neighbour with your phone number is worth more than any app. And a shared calendar or group chat with siblings stops the whole load falling on one person and the same job being done twice.
For the worry between visits
A simple routine helps: a set call time, a check-in from the visitor, an agreement about who rings whom if something changes. If safety is the fear — falls, confusion, someone who could not raise the alarm — a personal alarm or a welfare-check arrangement is worth asking My Aged Care about.
And when you do visit, spend some of it on the boring, useful things: meet the GP, sort the paperwork, walk the house for trip hazards. It buys calm for the months you are away.
