The garden and the lawns
A garden getting away from someone is often the first visible sign that things are getting hard, and it is one of the easier ones to put right.
It is also more likely to be subsidised than people assume — garden and lawn upkeep can count as home maintenance under the subsidised programs.
What it usually needs
Most of the time it is a regular mow and edge, with the occasional bigger tidy — hedges, weeding, green waste hauled away. Gutters and anything up a ladder are a different trade, with different insurance, so ask about those separately.
A one-off blitz to get on top of it, then a fortnightly mow to keep it there, is the pattern that works for most people.
Is it cheaper for pensioners?
Often, yes — but usually through the subsidised system rather than a special rate from the mower. If someone has had an aged care assessment, garden and lawn maintenance can be funded as help to keep living at home. Some councils also run low-cost garden schemes for older residents.
