When getting out is the hard part, a lot of what someone needs can come in instead — far more of it than people realise.
Feet are not a small thing
Toenails nobody can reach, or feet that hurt to stand on, are a genuine falls risk, not a cosmetic one. A mobile podiatrist visits at home, and for many older people it is subsidised — through an aged care assessment, or on a GP care plan.
It is one of the highest-value visits to arrange, and one of the most overlooked.
A haircut at home
A mobile hairdresser comes to the house, which for someone who has not been out in a fortnight is often the thing that lifts a whole week. It is not vanity — feeling like yourself again does real good.
These are ordinary private services in most areas; a quick way to find one nearby is to describe it to AskFam and let it point you at local mobile providers.
What else comes to them
Physiotherapy, occupational therapy and other allied health are more often mobile than people expect, and are usually subsidised once assessed. My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 is the way in for the funded versions.
The rule of thumb: before assuming someone has to travel for something, check whether it comes to them. Surprisingly often, it does.
