Help / Where to start

Signs your parent might need a hand

It is rarely one dramatic thing. It is a pile-up of small ones — and because you see it in glimpses, on visits or calls, it is easy to miss or to explain away. Here is what to actually look for.

Around the house

The place is less kept than it was. Post piling up, bills unopened. Food out of date, or a fridge that is oddly empty. The garden gone, the washing behind. Appliances left unused because they have become confusing.

None of these on its own means much. Several together usually means the everyday running of the house has quietly got too hard.

In themselves

Weight loss, or clothes that no longer fit, are the ones people miss and the ones that matter most — they often mean someone has stopped eating properly. Unsteadiness, a new shuffle, bruises they brush off. Wearing the same clothes, or a change in how they keep themselves.

These edge toward the safety questions: if there are falls, or you suspect medicines are being missed, that is a GP conversation, not a wait-and-see.

In mood and memory

Going quiet, going out less, losing interest in things they loved — low mood in older people is common, treatable, and not something to accept as "just their age". And repeated questions, missed appointments, or getting lost on familiar routes point to memory, which is worth a GP visit rather than a guess.

Loneliness is its own real thing, and one of the easiest to actually do something about.

Trust it, and start small

If your gut says something has changed, it usually has. You do not need certainty to act — you need one small step: a chat with their GP, a call to My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 to start an assessment, or one practical thing taken off their plate this week.

Better to raise it early and gently than to wait for the fall that forces it.

What AskFam does and does not do

AskFam works out what you need and points you at services that already exist. It does not employ anyone, does not arrange the work, and takes no fee or commission — from you or from them.

It also has not checked anybody. Where you see a business listed, that is a public listing, not a recommendation. Where somebody offers on a job you posted, that is them describing themselves, in their own words. Ask for what matters to you, and take your time about it.
